Building Bridges Between University Technologies, Industry, and the Investment Community
Sponsored by Emory University, Duke University, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, University of Florida and Vanderbilt University.University discoveries are often at an embryonic stage of development. Funding to pursue proof of concept for these technologies has always been difficult to secure. This problem--in combination with the expectations of venture capital and industry that technology be "better developed"-- creates a funding gap. Like all stages of the innovation pathway, research support and capital are critical to achieve proof of concept. This panel will analyze this funding gap as well as explore creative mechanisms to secure a contiguous funding pathway.

IP to Impress the VC
Sponsored by Catalina & AssociatesEveryone knows that intellectual property protection, and in particular, patent protection, is a critical factor in the commercial success of biotechnology companies. Patents enable biotech companies to create and to maintain a competitive advantage. Just as importantly, a strong patent portfolio is also critical in attracting venture capital investment. What do VCs and Big Pharma look for in evaluating an emerging biotech’s IP portfolio? What strategies should early stage biotech companies implement to best leverage their IP to attract needed capital? How should a start-up biotech company prepare for an IP due diligence? What can a biotech company do to present its IP portfolio in its best light? These are some of the questions that will be answered in this year’s IP Workshop.

Industry Trends for In-licensing and Partnering
Sponsored by Georgia Department of Economic Development and Georgia AlliesPharmaceutical companies and large- and mid-cap biotech firms recognize the growing importance of working with venture-backed companies to address the discovery and early development components of their pipelines. For most private companies, deciding who to collaborate with and how to structure such a partnership may have even more impact on the success of their company than the FDA’s approval of their product. Many early-stage biotech companies look to partnership strategies to share development expenses and to monetize both core and non-core assets. While these partnerships may alleviate near-term cash concerns for the company, many companies overlook the long-term consequences of the partnering terms effects and how the terms will affect the future strategy and valuation of the company. This plenary session will feature a roundtable discussion with pharmaceutical and biotech executives who will discuss their own pipeline sustainability requirements and examine how collaborations can impact their needs. They will also address the question of how large firms should build relationships with early stage firms.
